چکیده

We have designed a new ultrasonic transmitter to track free-ranging premoIt blue crabs and signal the event of ecdysis. The transmitter (15 g in air, 5 g in water) operates for 6-8 weeks on a small lithium battery, producing 75-kHz tracking pulses at about I-sec intervals. It is attached to the crab's carapace, with a magnetic reed switch placed near the line where the carapace will separate from the abdomen as the molting crab backs out of its old shell. A magnet attached to the abdomen pulls away at ecdysis, signalling the event by allowing the switch to open and doubling the pulse rate of the transmitter. During field tests with II premolt male blue crabs in a small tributary of central Chesapeake Bay, the devices allowed us to assess movement patterns and selection of microhabitats for molting at scales of < I m. Even with this small sample size several trends were evident. Distance traveled per day (average 130 m, range 0-569 m) and movement patterns were highly variable in the days prior to molt. Crabs moved more during the day, and molted by day or night in roughly equal proportions. All crabs selected shallow «0.5 m) marsh-lined banks of a tidal creek for ecdysis. This study, the first in which arthropod molting has been telemetered in the field, provides a technique applicable to intraand interspecific comparisons with other large

Patterns of Limb Loss in the Blue Crab, Call/nectes Sap/dus Rathbun, and the Effects of Autotomy on Growth

A substantial proportion of the blue crab (Calfinecles sapidus Rathbun) population in a subestuary of the Chesapeake Bay was either missing or regenerating at least one limb in 1986 (24.8%) and 1987 (18.8%). Most crabs were missing a single cheliped; loss of four or more limbs was rare. Between June and November 1987, laboratory experiments were conducted in which one cheliped or both chelipeds...

Ultrasonic Biotelemetry of Muscle Activity from Free- Ranging Marine Animals: A New Method for Studying Foraging by Blue Crabs (Callinectes sapidus)

The design and utilization ofa small (16 g in air, 6 g in water) ultrasonic transmitter for animal tracking and bio-telemetry of muscle activity are described. To our knowledge this is the first use of such devices to telemeter a specific behavior (ingestion) from a free-ranging marine predator. The transmitter produces regularly recurring short tracking pulses, and long pulses triggered by the...

Foraging and agonistic activity co-occur in free-ranging blue crabs (Callinectes sapidus): observation of animals by ultrasonic telemetry

To define the temporal and spatial patterns of agonism and foraging activity in blue crabs (Callinectes sapidus), we monitored five free-ranging animals in the Rhode River subestuary of the central Chesapeake Bay by ultrasonic telemetry during the summers of 1991–93. The interdependence between the two activities was of special interest. High crab densities have been associated with more freque...

Post-mating behavior, intramolt growth, and onset of migration to Chesapeake Bay spawning grounds by adult female blue crabs, Callinectes sapidus Rathbun

After molting to maturity, female blue crabs must rebuild muscles atrophied to permit molting and grow larger ones commensurate with the larger exoskeleton. They also must acquire energy for oogenesis and for migration to high-salinity spawning habitat, a distance of >150 km for females mating in the Upper Chesapeake Bay. Using telemetry and mark–recapture techniques, postcopulatory females in ...

Intraspecific interference among foraging blue crabs Callinectes sapidus : interactive effects of predator density and prey patch distribution

The interactive effects of predator density and prey distribution on the foraging behavior of an important estuarine predator were studied, at a fine temporal scale, using ultrasonic telemetry. The movement and agonistic activity of individual blue crabs Callinectes sapidus were monitored in large field enclosures, in which the density of crabs and the distribution of patches of bivalve prey Ma...
